Which Cancer is the Leading Cause of Death Worldwide?

Posted on: November 18th, 2014 in Lung Cancer by MDSBlogger |

The leading cancer killer in both men and women each year is lung cancer according to the American Lung Association. With over 160,000 people losing their lives each year to this cancer, it is important to learn more about this disease with the Medical Department Store. Lung cancer has the most deaths worldwide.

Cancer kills 8.4 million people every year and 19% of those deaths are from this cancer.

Week 3 post 2

With the number of deaths from cancer increasing, we are bringing you key statistics about lung disease.

There are many causes of the different types of lung cancer, but tobacco use/smoking is the number one cause.

Key statistics about lung cancer:

  • The American Cancer Society’s estimates for lung cancer in the United States for 2014 are about 224,210   new cases of lung cancer (116,000 in men and 108,210 in women).
  • Lung cancer accounts for about 27% of all cancer deaths and is by far the leading cause of cancer death among both men and women. Each year, more people die of lung cancer than of colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined.
  • Overall, the possibility that a man will develop lung cancer in his lifetime is about 1 in 13; for a woman, the risk is about 1 in 16. These numbers include both smokers and non-smokers. For smokers the risk is much higher, while for non-smokers the risk is lower.
  • The statistics on survival rates of lung cancer are dependent on the person’s age, which stage the cancer is at, and how soon it is detected.
  • The five-year survival rate for lung cancer is 53.5 percent for cases detected when the disease is still   localized (within the lungs). However, only 15 percent of lung cancer cases are diagnosed at an early stage.

If you or a loved one lives with lung cancer or has recently been diagnosed, the Medical Department Store is here with all the oxygen supplies you need. If you need portable oxygen, oxygen concentrators, or supplies, contact us today.

Illnesses can ruin a vacation, enjoy your family time by staying healthy.

The summertime is a great time to travel across the country or around the world, whichever you choose, it is best to stay healthy. Many families choose to travel during the summer for various reasons like the kids are out of school, warm weather, and visiting relatives. Winter is not the only time you could catch an illness while traveling anywhere, so Medical Department Store wants you to be cautious so your vacation is not ruined by a virus or infection. From the common cold to the troubles of dealing with diarrhea, always being aware of what is around you can help make your vacation time enjoyable and worry free throughout the entire time. Steering clear of illness while on vacation can give you optimal time for fun and adventure.

Steering Clear of Illness While on Vacation:

  1. Always wash your hands. This may seem obvious, but so many people overlook doing so before eating or stopping to get a snack at a convenience store. Whenever you stop on a road trip, make it a practice to have everyone wash their hands and carry hand sanitizer for after.
  2. Get lots of rest. Sometimes, vacation seems to wear you out more than it gives you relaxation. Getting a good amount of shut eye can keep your immune system working properly, so it can fight off germs and viruses.
  3. Pack medications just in case. If the common cold hits you while on vacation, you can save a bit of time and money by not having to run to the store if you bring the cold meds with you. If you feel a cold coming on, you can prepare yourself by taking preventative medications.
  4. When it comes to food and water wherever you’re going, be cautious. Avoiding cold meat trays at the hotel and buffets on your vacation can save you the worries of dealing with diarrhea and food poisoning.

Whether you are staying in the Florida area for the summer hitting the beach or plan to venture out of the state, Medical Department Store encourages you to steer clear of illnesses and have fun.

Peach Month is upon us and so are delicious recipes.

Peach Month is upon us and so are delicious recipes.

August is National Peach Month, which means it is time to sink your teeth into a juicy peach. Peaches are a good source of vitamins A, B, and C, all while only having 40 calories in a medium sized peach. This delicious and low calorie fruit is great for snacking or baking into recipes. Summer is the perfect time to cook with peaches because they are currently in season and freshly picked. When picking out peaches look for firm and fuzzy skins without blemishes. Whether you’re looking for a yummy peach dessert or a sweet and savory dinner dish, Medical Department Store is going to show you how to get creative with a few great national peach month recipes.

Peach and Tomato Pasta

Ingredients:

  • 5 medium sized tomatoes, coarsely chopped
  • 2 large peaches, chopped
  • 1 onion chopped
  • 4 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • 1 can chickpeas
  • A bunch of basil, leaves plucked and stalks chopped
  • 9 oz. penne pasta

Directions: Heat oven to 390 degrees. In a lightly oiled baking dish, stir together tomatoes, peaches, onions, garlic, olive oil, salt, cinnamon, black pepper and cayenne pepper. Roast uncovered for 40 minutes, stirring at least twice during cooking, until ingredients have softened and thickened. Stir in chickpeas, balsamic vinegar and basil stalks after 30 minutes. Cook pasta according to package instructions. Mix pasta with sauce and basil leaves. Serve.

Peach Wontons

Ingredients:

  • 2 pounds ripe peaches, peeled and sliced/diced (about 8 peaches)
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • Wonton wrappers (1 12 oz. pack should do it.)
  • Canola or vegetable oil, enough for about 1″ of oil in your pan
  • Powdered sugar for sprinkling

Directions: Slice up the peach and toss in a large bowl with flour and brown sugar. Lay out the wonton wrappers, drop about a tablespoon of sliced/diced peaches and a tad bit of peach juice in the center of each wonton wrapper. Using your finger or pastry brush, wet the outside edge of the wonton wrapper. Fold one corner of the wrapper over to the other corner, and gently press down to seal edges. Make sure to seal edges thoroughly to avoid the oil splattering. Add an additional fold, if you’d like by dabbing the corners with water and folding them up to meet in the middle. Heat 1″ of canola or vegetable oil in a heavy bottomed pan over medium-high heat to 375°F. Carefully slide wontons into oil and fry for about 2-3 minutes, turning as they fry. When they reach a lovely golden brown, remove from oil to a paper towel lined pan. Sprinkle with powdered sugar. Let cool ever so slightly and enjoy! Makes about 50-55 wontons.

Now that your mouth is watering, go ahead and make dinner with a delightful peach dessert. Here at Medical Department Store, we have plans to make both of these!

Recommit to Your Health in 5 Steps

Posted on: July 24th, 2014 in Elderly, Food, Health, Uncategorized by MDSBlogger |

Recommit to your health this summer with our easy tips.

Your health is a fragile thing and should be treated as such. The habits you do day to day can benefit or harm your health. As you age the habits you had at a young age can start to catch up to you. Being healthy isn’t about restricting diets or running marathons; it is about living a balanced and positive life. Balance comes from what you put into your body and what you do with it. Through food and exercise you can shape your health and life. The Medical Department Store has products to ensure your safety and health.

Step 1

Examine your current diet. Make sure you are eating enough fruits, vegetables, protein, and whole grains to sustain energy throughout the day. You should always eat a big breakfast, medium lunch, and a smaller dinner with healthy snacks in between. When you feed your body with empty calories from processed or sugar-packed food, you are restricting it from the nutrients it needs.

Step 2

Exercise benefits all bodily systems. It promotes blood flow, strengthens muscles, releases endorphins, and clears the mind. An individual should exercise at least 5 days a week for 30 minutes. A brisk walk can get blood pumping and allow fresh oxygen into the lungs. Find an activity you enjoy and invite family and friends to join!

 Step 3

Sleep allows the brain to process information and can improve memory, increase creativity, and sharpen focus. It can help you maintain a healthy weight and decrease inflammation. Make time in your life to achieve a good night’s sleep.

Step 4

Attitude is everything. Develop a positive attitude towards a healthy lifestyle and think of everything you do as an investment to your future. By beginning new habits today, you are likely to improve your health in the future. Simple ways to increase your happiness are creating a gratitude list, laughing, and spending time outdoors. If you find yourself struggling to be happy, consider expressing your thoughts by journaling or seeking professional health.

Step 5

The final step to committing to a healthy lifestyle is taking preventative measures to avoid accidents and injuries. The Medical Department Store offers walking aids, first aid care, and daily living aids to ensure your safety.

We hope you take these steps and incorporate them into your life. You deserve to have a healthy body, mind, and relationships. The Medical Department Store encourages you to have a happy and healthy summer!
