Motorcycle cushions

Airhawk cushions can be used in many ways to make you more comfortable. These cushions are perfect motorcycle seat covers to make long rides completely comfortable.

The unsurpassed comfort of Airhawk cushions are not only for wheelchairs; also motorcycles, vehicles, and sports activities. While cruising on the motorcycle on a summer’s day, your last mile will feel like the first because you are no longer worried about trying to stay comfortable.

The patented Airhawk system in each innovatively designed cushion promotes consistent blood flow longer than the competitors’ products. Memory foam, gel, and other products do not compare to the Airhawk design.

The Medical Department Store knows that sitting for a long time, whether in a wheelchair or on a motorcycle, can get hot and painful. Want to know the best part about the Airhawk cushions? You eliminate the hot seat factor. Open mesh panels let air flow into the cushion, in turn reducing heat buildup.

Interconnected air cells evenly distribute weight and pressure across the entire motorcycle seat. This not only makes your ride smoother, it can now be more enjoyable because you will want to ride more. These interconnected air cells also work as shock absorbers and reduce vibrations caused by the motorcycle.

The Airhawk cushions are made to be affordable, portable, and there is a sizing chart to see which cushion size will work for your motorcycle’s brand and shape. If you are still unsure why you should buy an Airhawk cushion from the Medical Department Store, we can give you a few more reasons.

5 Tips for Older Americans Month

Posted on: May 14th, 2014 in Older Americans Month by MDSBlogger |

older americans

Each May, our nation celebrates Older Americans Month to recognize older Americans for their contributions. This year’s theme is “Safe Today, Healthy Tomorrow,” so Medical Department Store wants to provide older Americans with information that will allow them to continue to stay healthy and active.

This year the focus is to raise awareness on injury prevention. Medical Department Store wants you to consider these simple safety tips to prevent injury.

  • To lower the risk of falling or injury, have a doctor or physician review all medications to reduce the chance of dangerous side effects and drug interactions. Create a medication schedule or use a scheduler box to make sure you take no less or more than prescribed.
  • Maintain a diet with adequate dietary calcium and Vitamin D. Also, discuss physical activities that are appropriate for you. Regular exercise improves endurance, strength and balance.
  • Have your vision checked regularly. Sight plays a large role in preventing injuries at home, on the road and in the community.
  • Install handrails and grab bars wherever they are helpful, especially around stairs and in bathrooms. Also, ensure that there is enough lighting inside and outside of your home, especially around frequently used walkways. Nightlights are a great way to light up the bathroom at night.
  • Test smoke detectors regularly. Be sure to have a smoke alarm in or very near your cooking area. When cooking, wear snug-fitting or short-sleeve clothing and high-quality oven mitts that cover part of your arms to help reduce the chance of getting burned.

Medical Department Store wants a society where older adults can live safe, healthy and independent lives. Visit our online store or stop in to view our products that help prevent injury. Celebrate Older Americans Month this May and help older Americans live longer and healthier lives.

Celebrate Nurse’s Week

Posted on: May 14th, 2014 in Nurse's Week by MDSBlogger |

Nurse's week

The Medical Department Store is thrilled to celebrate nurses and all that they do for their patients during National Nurse’s Week, May 6-12.

Patients often recognize that a nurse is a health care professional with whom their families have the most contact, but some may not realize that nurses are leaders in improving the quality of care in our community.

Nurses have continuously been leading initiatives to increase access to care and improve outcomes by focusing on primary care, wellness, family care and providing information about health care providers.

If you’re looking to celebrate the nurses who have helped you care for medical problems with you or a loved one, check out these five inexpensive ways to honor the special nurses in your lives.

  1. Hand out Lifesavers with a note, “You are a lifesaver.” Cheesy, but it will put a smile on their face!
  2. Create a care package with candies or gift cards.
  3. Post pictures of nurse teams in waiting rooms. Include their name and tell about one of their great qualities.
  4. Host a small open house with treats and beverages in a break room to thank nurses.
  5. Team up with a local elementary school or daycare to create art and thank-you notes for nurses.

Nurses are rapidly creating and expanding new job roles; such as nurse wellness coaches, care coordinator specialists or nurse navigators that help develop healthy lifestyle practices. A nurse’s commitment to continuing knowledge, clinical skill, and patience is combined with a sincere commitment to patients and compassion for their families. Wherever health care is provided, a nurse is likely to be there.

Medical Department Store encourages you to thank a nurse for all that they do in our communities. If you are in the market for home medical equipment, Medical Department Store has the products necessary to make a speedy recovery and make a nurse’s day easier.

Donate to Save a Life: Celebrate National Donate Life Month

Donate to Save a Life: Celebrate National Donate Life Month

It is possible to save more than 20 people’s lives, just by becoming an organ donor. Medical Department Store appreciates your attention to this issue, and encourages you to consider you decision.

More than 120,000 men, women, and children are currently on the waiting list for organ transplants in the United States. This comprehensive list also includes the 67,000 multicultural patients and 2,000 pediatric patients who are waiting for the right match.

First, to debunk some common myths, anyone can be a potential donor, regardless of age, race, or medical history. There is no cutoff age for donating organs. Doctors choose whether or not to use organs based on strict medical criteria so don’t count yourself out! Let your doctors decided whether your organs and tissues are suitable for donation.

Another common misconception is that people who have certain medical conditions are not able to donate their organs. Doctors may still be able to use certain organs and tissues for transplant. Don’t prematurely dismiss the contribution you could potentially make.

Some people believe that their families will be charged if they choose to donate their organs, adding additional bills their relatives must cover. This misconception is false. The family of the organ donor is never charged. Any tests doctors may perform to determine the suitability of organs is covered by the hospital, and the cost for organ removal is assigned to the family of the recipient.

Now that you have the facts, Medical Department Store encourages you to become an organ donor and make a difference in the lives of many potential recipients. If you identify with an ethnic minority, it is especially important that you consider becoming an organ donor. African-Americans, Asians, Pacific Islanders, Native Americans, and Hispanics have an increased likelihood of being diagnosed with a chronic condition that is more prevalent in minorities.

Celebrate National Pecan Month with Some Heart-Healthy Recipes

Celebrate National Pecan Month with Some Heart-Healthy Recipes

If you think outside that oozy, gooey, goodness of pecan pie, you will find that pecans pack a punch in the nutrition category. Since Americans are snacking more often, the need for healthy and nutritious snacks is greater than ever.

The National Pecan Sheller’s Association found that a one-ounce serving of 12-20 pecan halves has a great nutritional value:

-Pecans have more antioxidants than any other variety of nut

-Pecans can reduce the risk of heart disease and lower cholesterol

-Pecans contain more than 19 vitamins and minerals

-Pecans are a natural source of protein and are sodium-free

A poll was conducted and found that 48% of adult (18-70 year olds) eating occurs between meals. This new type of culture suggests that a new type of “snacking culture” is emerging.

Pecans are packed with fiber which promotes good colon health. The fiber that is found in pecans helps to clean out the gastrointestinal system which increases the colon’s efficiency. This leads to benefits such as reduced risk of colitis, colon cancer, and hemorrhoids.

Pecans also boost heart health by reducing the risk of coronary heart disease, and can even prevent some cancers. The minerals found in pecans work with calcium to strengthen bones and teeth.

Not a fan of nuts straight from the shell? Throw them in your salad, yogurt, or casserole to gain the same benefits.

Need some ideas?  Check out this recipe for Herbed Pecan Snack Mix

5 c. cereal (any combination of rice or corn squares, crispy corn or rice cereal bites)

1 ½ c. pretzels

1 c. pecan halves

1/3 c. butter or margarine

1 T. dried parsley

1 t. dried thyme

½ t. celery salt

½ t. onion powder

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Combine cereals, pretzels, and pecans in a 9×13 baking pan. In a bowl, stir melted butter and remaining ingredients together. Pour over cereal mixture, and toss gently until coated. Bake for 25 minutes, stirring twice. Spread in a large shallow pan or on foil to cool before serving.

Here’s another recipe that will get rave reviews.

Easy Cheesy Ball

2 (8 oz) packages cream cheese

1 (1oz) package dry ranch dressing mix

2 ½ c. shredded cheddar cheese

1 ½ c. chopped pecans

In a medium bowl, mix softened cream cheese, dressing mix, and cheddar cheese. Shape the mixture into a ball. Roll the ball in chopped pecans. Refrigerate covered until ready to serve. Serve with crackers or vegetables.

No matter how you crack it, pecans are full of rich heart-healthy benefits.  Medical Department Store encourages you to keep your bones and teeth healthy by adding pecans to your diet. If you are experiencing problems with mobility or daily living, contact Medical Department Store for a wide variety of medical equipment to help ease your problems.

Brain Injury- Getting the Attention it Needs at the Expense of Others

Posted on: March 25th, 2014 in Brain Injury by MDSBlogger |

Medical Department Store recognizes March as Brain Injury Awareness Month.  Although brain injuries are very common (1.7 million people sustain a TBI annually), this type of injury does not always get a lot of attention in the media. There has been more attention on the subject in the last few years, but sadly that usually followed a tragedy by some person or a group.

When news reporter Bob Woodruff suffered a brain injury in 2006 while covering the war, he used his position to bring more attention to this type of injury. Woodruff’s injury from shrapnel in the field helped to bring more attention to the soldiers who were suffering brain injuries at record levels.  Reports say that up to 19 percent of returning active duty veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars have TBIs. These injuries can be from shrapnel, helicopter crashes, gunshot wounds, blasts and motor vehicle accidents, many of which are IED related. Many soldiers have sustained injuries to the brain, but in many of the past wars, the medical care was not there treat them as the soldiers died. Quick medical response and advancements in battle field treatment has saved the lives of many more soldiers.

When U.S. Representative Gabby Giffords of Arizona was shot in the head in an attempted assignation back in 2011, the world saw the brutality and much of the recovery that happens with a traumatic brain injury. Her story brought even more attention to this problem.

Another big attention getter in the area of brain injury has been the long-term effects of concussions in the NFL. In the last few years, a number of former NFL players are now experiencing the effects of their years of getting hurt, inadequate pads and helmets and team trainers and doctors who sent them back in to play too soon, are crying foul. The NFL has already paid out millions in lawsuits to players and their families for players who are experiencing Alzheimer’s-like symptoms.

If you are living with a brain injury or are caring for someone who has one, let the Medical Department Store help you. Visit our online catalog for lift chairs and patient lifts to canes and scooters and more.

Posted on: March 7th, 2014 in Multiple Sclerosis by MDSBlogger |

Are you living with Multiple Sclerosis or do you have someone close to you that has MS? Medical Department Store offers this information about Multiple Sclerosis to teach you more about this disease and to share equipment and products that can make living with MS easier.

What is Multiple Sclerosis?  Multiple Sclerosis or MS is a disease that affects the brain and spinal cord. MS destroys the myelin that surrounds the nerves and act as an insulator. Without the myelin, electrical signals that are transmitted throughout the brain and spinal cord are disrupted or stopped due to the scarring.

What does sclerosis mean and where does it get its name?  MS gets its name from the buildup of scar tissue (sclerosis) in the brain and the spinal cord that can attack different parts of the body.

Who can get Multiple Sclerosis? Anyone can get MS. There are certain groups that are more at risk than others.

  • Multiple Sclerosis is most commonly diagnosed in individuals between the ages of 20 and 50
  • Multiple Sclerosis appears more frequently in Caucasians than in Hispanics or African Americans
  • Multiple Sclerosis is relatively rare among Asians
  • Multiple Sclerosis can strike both men and women but is more common in women

Multiple Sclerosis is not contagious and cannot be spread through contact or through the air or drinking water. Even doctors and scientist are not sure what causes MS and while there are treatments to slow the progress of the disease, there is no cure.

Is Multiple Sclerosis just a problem in the United States? No, Multiple Sclerosis is found worldwide. The latest stats show that there are currently 350,000 to 500,000 people in the U.S. who have been diagnosed with MS.  Worldwide, there are over 2.5 million people are living with MS.

February is Senior Independence Month

Posted on: February 18th, 2014 in Uncategorized by MDSBlogger |

February is Senior Independence Month and Medical Department Store loves anything that celebrates seniors! We want all seniors to live happy, safe and independent lives as long possible. Here are some suggestions to help maximize their independence and still be safe.

  1. Avoid the dark and turn on the lights.  Our eyes react differently to light as we age and older eyes may require more light. Dim and poor lighting can lead to falls and the loss of independence or worse, so turn on the lights in the house and outdoors after dusk. Use more lamps and overhead lights. NEVER walk through a dark room or down dark stairs.
  2. Mind your medication with a med-minder. Medication errors or forgetting to take medications can lead to major health issues and loss of your independence. Using a daily or weekly med-minder can be a lifesaver. Talk to your pharmacy about having our medications placed in a med-minder today.
  3. Utilize the senior services that are available in your area. Senior meal sites and programs like Meals-on-Wheels are present in most communities. Having good and enough nutrition can be the difference between staying independent and having to leave your home.
  4. Know your limits. It may be hard to admit that you can no longer do everything you used to do, but getting hurt because you were cleaning the gutters or trying to mop the floor is worse. Look into senior chores services or home health services. You can also hire these jobs done at decent rates.
  5. Beware of the bathroom!  Bathrooms are one of the biggest areas of injuries in the home. Having the right pieces of bath safety equipment can help. Ask the experts at Medical Department Store about how a shower bench or chair, a raised toilet seat or bath lift can make the bathroom safer.

Medical Department Store would love to hear from you during Senior Independence Month. Let our experts find you the equipment and products you need to live the life you want.
