What Medicare Means to You

Posted on: August 9th, 2013 in Medicare by MDSBlogger |

What does Medicare mean to you? Medicare is a great form of insurance that lets you choose your health and prescription drug coverage.  With over 10 different plans to suit your needs, Medicare can definitely assist with your medical needs.

Most people tend to confuse Medicare with Medicaid, but there really is a difference.  Medicaid is a state-run program, that varies from state to state, that provides medical coverage for people with low income or little to no health resources.  Some people may qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid.

Medicare unfortunately doesn’t cover every medical expense.  Medicare doesn’t cover cosmetic surgery, health care outside of the United States, hearing aids, nursing homes, eye glasses or dental care.

What Medicare Means to You

There are many Medicare Plans and it can be overwhelming.

When you turn 65 years old, you are automatically enrolled in Medicare, if you’re getting Social Security benefits.  A Medicare insurance card will be mailed out three months before you turn 65. If you are not receiving Social Security benefits, you will have to apply for Medicare. If you or someone you know happens to be on disability from Social Security for at least two years, Medicare will help.

How do you enroll or sign up? The Social Security Administration (SSA) takes care of enrolling people in Medicare.  The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) administers Medicare.  Choosing the right Medicare plan is something to think carefully about. Don’t make an impulse decision when picking one. Co-payments and deductibles are included in some of the plans, be sure to ask.

Keep in mind that August 21st is the National Senior Citizens day.  This day promotes health and well-being with our older citizens in our communities. Consider volunteering at a nursing home or spend time with family on this great national holiday.

If you have any Medicare or Medicaid questions or concerns, feel free to contact one of our Medical Department Store staff members to walk you through how Medicare and Medicaid works.

Senior Citizen Driving Tips

Posted on: August 7th, 2013 in Elderly, Uncategorized by MDSBlogger |

If you’re not fit to drive, consider asking a friend or family member to get you around town.

Some people have will have to give up the independence and ability to drive because of a medical condition or because of age so it’s always wise to practice smart driving when you’re older to insure you get to your destination safe and sound.  By the time you are a senior citizen, you have been driving a lot of miles and you have a more relaxed driving style. Medical Department Store wants to provide some tips to help you drive a little safer.

You may need to improve your driving style by making a couple little changes to be a better driver when you’re older.  Weigh out the pros and cons of driving during the day versus driving at night. See what works for you and plan your entire trip ahead of time. This will help you keep track of where you need to go.  Make sure to check your local weather forecast to determine what the conditions of the roads will be or if there is any road construction or detours, based on where you’re located.

Never mix alcohol or medications with driving. If you feel lightheaded, don’t drive and call someone to escort you where you need to go.  Alcohol and certain prescription medications can impair your reaction time, thinking and driving.  Make sure to read to medications carefully.  Some medications specifically state not to operate machinery or to drive a car. Consider asking your doctor about the side effects of your prescribed medicines and how it could affect your driving.

Most of all, before you drive, make sure your car is ready to go.  From basics like if there is fuel in the car and if the tires are inflated to making sure the oil is at the recommended level and your exterior lights work.  These little things will help keep you going instead of being broken down on the side of the road.

Medical Department Store hopes these tips will help you the next time you get in your vehicle. Consider looking at our diabetic supplies and urological supplies.  Please contact us with any questions.

What is Your Stroke Risk?

Posted on: June 26th, 2013 in Stroke by MDSBlogger |

Stroke is a leading cause of death in the United States, killing nearly 130,000 Americans each year. That’s 1 of every 19 deaths. We all need to be aware our stroke risk, so Medical Department Store have been talking about stroke and what your preventable risks are. Last time we talked about the preventable risks, now we’ll talk about the risks that you can’t control.

Age and race stroke risk factors

Different races are more at risk fr stroke, as are people who are older and women

The risk of stroke increases with age. After the age of 55, stroke risk doubles for every decade a person is alive.

Women suffer more strokes each year than men. Why? Often simply because women live longer and more age equals more risk. About 55,000 more women than men have strokes.

Hispanic and Asian/Pacific Islanders have higher risk than Caucasians and African Americans have twice the risk of stroke when compared to Caucasians. Obviously you can’t change your race, so if you in the high risk groups, be especially aware of your lifestyle choices.

Eye color and height isn’t the only thing that you can inherit from family.  If a family member has had a stroke, everyone in the family has a higher risk. Talk to your family soon.

Adding insult to injury, about 5 to 14 percent of the people who have a stroke this year will have a second one. Having a stroke puts you at a much higher risk for having another one.

Be smart. No your risks, both preventable and non-preventable and take the steps you need to take to stay healthy.

If you or someone you care about recovering from a stroke, see Medical Department Store for equipment and supplies to make recovery better and safer. From bathroom safety equipment to hospital beds and supplies, see Medical Department Store first.

What is Your Stroke Risk? Part 1

Posted on: June 21st, 2013 in Stroke by MDSBlogger |

Do you know the leading causes of stroke in the U.S? Did you know strokes can and do occur at any age, but our risk grows as we age? Medical Department Store want all of our customers to be stroke aware and live their best lives possible, so we’re sharing information about stroke this month.

Strokes and brain damage

If strokes are so preventable, why do so many happen every year? Preventative health measures reduce your risk of stroke!

80 percent of all strokes are preventable. What are the biggest preventable and/or treatable stroke risks? Some of the leading causes are high blood pressure, high LDL cholesterol and smoking. About half of Americans (49 percent) have at least one of these three risk factors, many have two or all three of the “big three.”

Those are the top three, but there are many more.  Other medical conditions and lifestyle choices that raise our stroke risk are diabetes. Being overweight or obese, having a poor diet, not having enough physical activity/ bring sedentary and excessive alcohol use. If you read the paper or watch TV you see a lot of coverage on the “American lifestyle” and how bad it is for us. Now you have more reasons.

What can you do to lower your preventable risk of stroke? Know your family history, stroke runs in families. If you have stroke in the family, pay even more attention to your lifestyle. Have your blood pressure and cholesterol checked regularly. Both can be controlled with a combination of diet, exercise and medication. If you smoke, stop smoking. This advice works for countless reasons beyond stroke prevention. Diabetes, being overweight and being sedentary are also things that can be controlled with some common sense approaches. Diet, exercise (and to an extent medication) are also great ways to get control of these problems as well. The first two suggestions are usually the cheapest and require no medication.

If you or someone you care about recovering from a stroke, see Medical Department Store for equipment and supplies to make recovery better and safer. From bathroom safety equipment to hospital beds and supplies, see Medical Department Store first.

The Right Bed + Quality Sleep = Better Health

Posted on: May 24th, 2013 in Better Sleep by MDSBlogger |

In continuing with our theme of sleep and how it affects your overall health, today we want to discuss how quality sleep benefits the body, finding the rightquality sleep medical department store mattress and how Medical Department Store can help you find comfort in your sleep.

Why does quality sleep matter? Our friends over at Health Magazine identified these proven benefits to getting good quality sleep:

  • It can improve memory
  • It can help you live longer
  • It curbs inflammation
  • It spurs creativity
  • It helps athletic performance
  • It can improve your school (and work) grades
  • It sharpens your attention span
  • It helps you maintain a healthy weight
  • It lowers stress
  • It can help you avoid accidents
  • It reduces depression

Honestly, any of these reasons should provide enough motivation for you to get more sleep. A key component of that is the mattress you sleep on.

What size bed is right for you? What does the size of the bed have to do with how well we sleep? Why does it matter how well we sleep? Here’s a basic size chart of modern beds:

  • California King is 72” x 84”
  • Standard King is 76” x 80”
  • Queen is 60” x 80”
  • Full size or Double is 53” x 75”
  • Twin is  38” x 75”

While you need enough space, you also need a mattress that isn’t lumpy, sagging or old. If you’ve have your spring mattress for six or seven years, it’s time to invest in something new.

People with a variety of illness or physical needs may do better in adjustable hospital beds. Medical Department Store carries electric beds, semi-electric beds, standard and bariatric varieties. We also carry special mattresses, pads and over-lays to help with issues like pressure sore and incontinence. We also carry safety railings and trapeze lifts for increased safety and maneuverability. We invite you to come to Medical Department Store during Better Sleep month and see what we have to offer.

We hope this month’s tips will help you and your family rest easier and live better. We’ll be back next month with more health-related information, so watch for updates!

Could Exercise Lead to Better Sleep?

Posted on: May 17th, 2013 in Better Sleep by MDSBlogger |

Sleep is such a basic human instinct, yet so many of us don’t get the sleep we need, and it’s turning us into a nation of coffee and energy drink-better sleep month medical department storedependent zombies. With May being Better Sleep Month, we want to focus on the importance of sleep and how to get more of it. The first thing we want to look at is exercise and its link to sleep.

Does exercise lead to better sleep? The experts say yes.

The National Sleep Foundation has recently come out with a study saying a good workout during the day may be just what the doctor ordered for getting a good night’s sleep. A sample of 1,000 adults ranging in age from 23 to 60 took part in the 2013 Sleep in America poll.

According to the study, physical activity was considered activity that exceeded 10 minutes completed in the past seven days, and participants were separated into four different levels of activity:

  • Vigorous: activities which require a lot of physical effort like running, cycling, swimming or competitive sports.
  • Moderate: activities which require more effort than normal like weight lifting, tai chi and yoga.
  • Light activity: walking.
  • No activity: those who completed no activity.

The results showed that exercisers documented better sleep than non-exercisers despite sleeping the same length of time every night. Non-exercisers also reported being sleepier than exercisers, pointing to the conclusion that regular exercise means better sleep.

What can we do? Start slow and get walking if possible. Note how you’re sleeping over a one or two week time period. Try to increase your walking or add weight lifting, tai chi or yoga to your routine. Do more if you can, but more importantly, just keep it consistent.

Medical Department Store offers a number of exercise aids and equipment to help you get stronger, more flexible and improve your range of motion whatever your age. Not only will you feel better from the exercise, but the better sleep at night will help you wake up feeling refreshed instead of groggy.

We’ll be back with another blog later this month talking about the benefits of better sleep and how Medical Department Store can help you achieve it. Until then, stay safe and live healthy!

What You Don’t Know About High Blood Pressure Can Hurt You

Posted on: April 17th, 2013 in Blood Pressure by MDSBlogger |

The World Health Organization was founded in 1948 to address health issues all over the world. The goal of the World Health Organization is greater awareness, healthy behaviors, improved detection, and enabling environments.

High blood pressure, or hypertension, can lead to heart problems and other circulatory issues.

Their focus for 2013 is High Blood Pressure.  High blood pressure is a common problem in the U.S. and around the world that leads to many other health related issues. Medical Department Store wants you to be informed about this all-too-common problem.

How common is high blood pressure? One in three adults worldwide has high blood pressure. The statistics of high blood pressure increases with age, from 1 in 10 people in their 20s and 30s to a staggering 5 in 10 people in their 50s in the United States.

The good news about high blood pressure is that it’s both preventable and treatable. Education about sodium and other causes is the key to making these positive changes. The risk of developing high blood pressure can be reduced by:

  • Reducing salt intake
  • Eating a balanced diet
  • Avoiding harmful use of alcohol
  • Regular physical activity/exercise
  • Maintaining a healthy body weight
  • Avoiding tobacco use (all kinds)
  • How much do you know about this potentially deadly condition?

So, why should we be concerned about high blood pressure?  High blood pressure, or hypertension, increases the risk of heart attacks, strokes and kidney failure in both men and women.

High blood pressure can also cause blindness, irregularities of the heartbeat and heart failure if it is not properly diagnosed and treated. Untreated sleep apnea can also cause a rise in blood pressure.

In the current vernacular, yes, high blood pressure “is kind of a big deal.”

Medical Department Store has many options for people dealing with high blood pressure. See our online catalog or store for blood pressure cuffs, scales, CPAP and BiPAP machines, and other equipment maintain your health.

We encourage you to take control of you blood pressure. There are a lot of people who want you around. Learn more about World Health Day at www.who.int .
